This half-day course is delivered either live online or in person.

It is only available on a group booking basis as an in-house course.

We developed our Introduction to the Retrofit of Buildings course to raise understanding of what retrofit is in the context of energy efficiency and climate change mitigation. This course is suitable for those who need an introduction to retrofit, for those who will want to go on and learn more, and for those in senior management who require a greater awareness of the subject and issues.

This is a summary of the course content:

  • Climate change – dealing with it in a ‘sustainable’ way
  • Why it is essential to understand different building types at the outset
  • The meaning of retrofit, what it entails and what it can achieve
  • Improving energy efficiency through retrofit and other means
  • EPC’s what they are and their reliability
  • The use of decision making tools in decision-making
  • The use of EPC’s and their risks!
  • Understanding the reasons for a ‘performance gap’
  • The need for a meticulous approach to all stages of retrofit
  • Applying guidance and Standards including BSI’s PAS2030 and PAS2035
  • Training and qualifications – what is competence?

The Introduction to the Retrofit of Buildings course typically runs from 9.30 to 1 pm.

Training will be delivered by Prof John Edwards, MA, DipBldgCons, CEnv, FCIOB, FRICS, IHBC,  a Chartered Building Surveyor, Chartered Environmentalist and Chartered Construction Manager:

  • Experience of sustainable refurbishment and energy efficiency retrofit spanning nearly forty years.
  • Leadership – has led in the development of best practice in undertaking research and development of Standards and guidance. Co-founded the Sustainable Traditional Buildings Alliance
  • Expertise – expert panel membership of BSI committees including PAS 2035, PAS 2030, PAS 2038 and the BSI Retrofit Standards Task Group and has been responsible for the retrofit of thousands of buildings ranging from social housing to Listed Buildings and Scheduled Monuments.
  • Chartered Environmentalist – the highest achievement for professional Environmentalists.
  • Certified in work to traditional and historic buildings – acknowledged as an expert by heritage bodies.
  • Chartered Construction Manager – highest acknowledgement of expertise in planning and managing construction work.
  • Chartered Building Surveyor – highest acknowledgement of expertise in assessing and analysing buildings.
  • Professor of Practice – highest acknowledgement by academia of industry expertise and leadership.
  • Qualified educator – qualified with expertise in the development and the delivery of training

Bookings and Cancellations

📧 Requests and Acknowledgements
  • All rescheduling or cancellation requests must be sent via email.
  • Clients are responsible for ensuring Environment Study Centre confirms receipt.
  • A written acknowledgement will be sent within 2 working days.
💸 Cancellation and Refunds
  • Cancellations must be in writing and received no later than least 14 days before the event start date.
  • Registration and Quality Assurance Fees cannot be refunded.
  • No refunds for cancellations received after the 14-day window.
  • Fees already paid to a third party are non-refundable.
  • Some courses/events may have different cancellation timeframes—see specific details.
🔁 Rescheduling Policy
  • Each booking may be rescheduled twice, provided the course is available (not guaranteed).
  • Requests must be made by email at least 14 days prior to the event.
  • You will be charged an admin fee of £120 +VAT or the cost of your Registration and Quality Assurance Fee – whichever is higher.
  • Reschedule requests made after deadline will not be actioned, and the full cost will be forfeited if not attended.
  • Rescheduled bookings must be taken up within 6 months and confirmed at least 14-days prior to the new course date, or the full cost is forfeited.
🤒 Sickness Clause
  • If a participant is unable to attend due to illness, a reschedule request may be made with supporting evidence (e.g. a medical certificate or equivalent).
  • Where possible, such requests should be submitted before the course date, but late requests will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
  • Registration and Quality Assurance Fees cannot be refunded.
  • Rescheduled bookings due to sickness must still be taken up within 12 months and confirmed at least 14 days prior to the new course date.
👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Family Emergency Clause
  • If a participant is unable to attend due to a genuine family emergency, a reschedule request may be submitted with brief supporting context.
  • While the 14-day notice period is preferred, late requests will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
  • The administration fee may be waived at the organiser’s discretion in genuine cases.
  • Rescheduled bookings due to family emergencies must still be taken up within 12 months and confirmed at least 14 days prior to the new course date.
🫥 No-Show Policy
  • Failure to attend without prior notice will result in forfeiture of the full course fee.
  • No reschedule or refund will be offered for no-shows.
↔️ Transfer Policy
  • Bookings may be transferred to another individual for an admin fee of £30 +VAT, provided notice is given at least 7 days prior to the course date.
  • The new participant must meet any course prerequisites and confirm attendance in writing.
🚫 Restrictions on Attendance
  • Trainers or course designers from other training organisations are not permitted to attend.
  • Bookings linked to other training providers will be cancelled.
  • Registration and Quality Assurance Fees cannot be refunded.
  • Registrations are monitored continuously.

There is no cooling off period for digital products and services.

If booked as part of a group, these terms will apply to all individual affected places.
