This in-house course covers the approach and practice in understanding dampness and moisture in buildings from a practical perspective as described in the guide, along with treatment. In summary it will cover:

  • The differences between traditionally constructed buildings and newer buildings including the way they perform and should be treated.
  • Ascertaining the age of a building and why it’s important
  • Comparing and contrasting modern and traditional buildings
  • Methods of inspection – issues to look out for
  • Equipment and tools
  • Moisture sources and how to ascertain
  • Moisture movement mechanisms and how to ascertain
  • Understanding the implications of alterations and retrofit and how to ascertain
  • Implications of use and the environment
  • Reporting
  • Legal issues

The course is set around the practicalities of investigating moisture issues in buildings in accordance with standards such BS 5250:2021: Management of moisture in buildings. Code of practice ‘Investigation of Moisture and its Effects in Traditional Buildings – Principles and Competencies’ a joint position statement (note the free download below) agreed between RICS, Historic England, PCA, Cadw, IHBC, SPAB, Historic Environment Scotland and the Northern Ireland Government (Department for Communities Historic Environment Division). The course is suitable for everyone that investigates moisture problems in buildings and this includes surveyors, Retrofit Assessors and those designing and implementing works to existing buildings. Examples will include dwellings and other building types. At the end of the course, participants should have an understanding of the common causes of moisture problems in buildings, the approach to analysis, methods of investigation including the equipment to be used.

Training will be delivered by Prof John Edwards, MA, DipBldgCons, CEnv, FCIOB, FRICS, IHBC,  a Chartered Building Surveyor, Chartered Environmentalist and Building Pathologist:

  • A practicing independent surveyor in private practice – Director of Edwards Hart Consultants
  • Commenced defect investigation including moisture analysis and monitoring in 1981
  • Experience of sustainable refurbishment and energy efficiency retrofit spanning nearly forty years involving thousands of buildings.
  • Leadership – has led in the development of best practice in undertaking research and development of Standards and guidance.
  • Expertise – expert panel membership of BSI committees and other panels
  • Chartered Environmentalist – the highest achievement for professional Environmentalists.
  • Certified in work to traditional and historic buildings – acknowledged as an expert by heritage bodies (certified / accredited by RICS, IHBC, CIOB)
  • Chartered Construction Manager – highest acknowledgment of expertise in planning and managing construction work.
  • Chartered Building Surveyor – highest acknowledgment of expertise in assessing and analysing buildings.
  • Professor of Practice – highest acknowledgment by academia of industry expertise and leadership.
  • Qualified educator – qualified with expertise in the development and the delivery of training

Bookings and Cancellations

📧 Requests and Acknowledgements
  • All rescheduling or cancellation requests must be sent via email.
  • Clients are responsible for ensuring Environment Study Centre confirms receipt.
  • A written acknowledgement will be sent within 2 working days.
💸 Cancellation and Refunds
  • Cancellations must be in writing and received no later than least 14 days before the event start date.
  • Registration and Quality Assurance Fees cannot be refunded.
  • No refunds for cancellations received after the 14-day window.
  • Fees already paid to a third party are non-refundable.
  • Some courses/events may have different cancellation timeframes—see specific details.
🔁 Rescheduling Policy
  • Each booking may be rescheduled twice, provided the course is available (not guaranteed).
  • Requests must be made by email at least 14 days prior to the event.
  • You will be charged an admin fee of £120 +VAT or the cost of your Registration and Quality Assurance Fee – whichever is higher.
  • Reschedule requests made after deadline will not be actioned, and the full cost will be forfeited if not attended.
  • Rescheduled bookings must be taken up within 6 months and confirmed at least 14-days prior to the new course date, or the full cost is forfeited.
🤒 Sickness Clause
  • If a participant is unable to attend due to illness, a reschedule request may be made with supporting evidence (e.g. a medical certificate or equivalent).
  • Where possible, such requests should be submitted before the course date, but late requests will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
  • Registration and Quality Assurance Fees cannot be refunded.
  • Rescheduled bookings due to sickness must still be taken up within 12 months and confirmed at least 14 days prior to the new course date.
👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Family Emergency Clause
  • If a participant is unable to attend due to a genuine family emergency, a reschedule request may be submitted with brief supporting context.
  • While the 14-day notice period is preferred, late requests will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
  • The administration fee may be waived at the organiser’s discretion in genuine cases.
  • Rescheduled bookings due to family emergencies must still be taken up within 12 months and confirmed at least 14 days prior to the new course date.
🫥 No-Show Policy
  • Failure to attend without prior notice will result in forfeiture of the full course fee.
  • No reschedule or refund will be offered for no-shows.
↔️ Transfer Policy
  • Bookings may be transferred to another individual for an admin fee of £30 +VAT, provided notice is given at least 7 days prior to the course date.
  • The new participant must meet any course prerequisites and confirm attendance in writing.
🚫 Restrictions on Attendance
  • Trainers or course designers from other training organisations are not permitted to attend.
  • Bookings linked to other training providers will be cancelled.
  • Registration and Quality Assurance Fees cannot be refunded.
  • Registrations are monitored continuously.

There is no cooling off period for digital products and services.

If booked as part of a group, these terms will apply to all individual affected places.
