The mark of our expertise is that those that develop, and deliver our courses are frequently requested to present their knowledge and expertise at conferences and other prestigious events. This includes our lead tutor and Director of Studies Professor John Edwards, who includes his own case studies as a practitioner. Professor Edwards said: “What better way to bring a subject to life than to include my own projects and case studies, and as I have been doing this since the 1980’s, I have plenty to show”. Professor Edwards also benefits from his involvement with the development of standards and guidance which includes PAS 2030, PAS 2035, PAS 2038, the recently published RICS Retrofit Standard, as well authoring CIOB Retrofit Guidance and IHBC Retrofit Guidance and lead authoring BS7913.
This week Professor Edwards will take centre stage as the main speaker at a CIOB retrofit event in Birmingham, this is followed by another retrofit event for those managing historic and cultural heritage estates in London, a building surveying conference in the midlands followed by a non-domestic retrofit building conference in Bristol and then talking about retrofit at a major housing conference in Cardiff, with much more to follow, including a major housing retrofit event in London. Professor Edwards commented: “It is essential that at conferences, you receive expert and honest views from speakers, and that has always been my endeavour”. Professor Edwards has also promoted UK expertise at events outside the UK.

Professor Edwards has spear headed training at the Environment Study Centre since 2014 and has been at the forefront in developing retrofit training in the UK. Indeed, the Environment Study Centre developed the first course to achieve a qualification required by PAS 2035. This is the 2-day traditional building retrofit course, achieving the Level 3 Award qualification. This course was first delivered in 2015.
